Love Harder: for Brandy and her Hot Awesome Dude

“The quandry: We feel terrible. Just horrible. And oh so helpless… if only there was something we could DO for them.

The answer: Ummmm. Did you forget that WE ARE THE INTERNET?!?!!??! And also, Yes We Can!!!

The result: Brandy and your Hot Awesome Dude… this one’s for you. Love, The Internet.”

for Brandy and her Hot Awesome Dude — GO WATCH THIS!

Our Plea

Our friend Brandy is a brilliant writer, a wonderful teacher, and a generous friend.  And she is in love with a man who has just been diagnosed with multiple myeloma.

We are raising money for the Multiple Myeloma Research Fund in his name.  For the price of a cinnamon dolce latte, half-caf, hold the whip, you can be part of an effort to cure a disease that affects approximately 750,000 people worldwide.

http://www.loveharder.org

Every dollar brings us a dollar closer to a cure.  And every donation brings a sliver of hope to a girl who needs all the hope she can get.

Love Harder,
RaeLeigh/bsg

What You Can Do

  • Give. Be part of a worldwide effort to cure a disease that affects approximately 750,000 people worldwide.  Every dollar helps.
  • Pass it on. Forward this story to five people.  Share this blog post.  Become our fan on Facebook.
  • Love harder. Life is short, love is unbending, and no one knows what could happen next. Tell someone you love them today.

Where Your Money Goes

  • The American Institute of Philanthropy recently named The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation one of the best organizations to give to in terms of their accountability and use of resources.
  • By working closely with researchers, clinicians and partners in the biotech and pharmaceutical industry, the MMRF has helped bring multiple myeloma patients four new treatments that are extending lives around the globe.
  • The MMRF has advanced twenty Phase I and Phase II clinical trials. They need your support to advance these clinical research programs and accelerate the development of better, more effective treatments.
  • The MMRF’s Multiple Myeloma Genomics Initiative recently became the first to sequence the multiple myeloma whole genome in its entirety.
  • A whopping 98% of your donation to the MMRF will be used immediately to support high-priority multiple myeloma research.
  • With diminishing funding for early stage drug development and the next myeloma treatments not expected to be approved until 2011, the MMRF desperately needs your help.

manic monday #4: random.

2010 January 11
by bigskygirlmt

clearly last week when i talked about pretending like i actually blog i meant “blog once a week. on monday. so manic monday isn’t so much a series but the only day i blog.”

hell.

i forgot in my resolutions last week to mention “go to new england and get silly-ish-ly drunk with Jill.” of which she reminded me in the comments. only she said “meet jill.”  which, let’s all just be honest with ourselves, shall we, miss pilgrim? silly-ish-ly drunk is probably a bit more accurate, wouldn’t you say?

so my roommate got married last weekend. photos to come.  and at work, when i talk to someone on the phone and am making small talk (which i am still terrible at somedays. i’m better if when i say “so how was your weekend?” instead of saying “good, thanks *biglongawkwardpause*” you say “great, thanks, HOW WAS YOURS?” we have covered this, people. i don’t require much.) i mention “my roommate got married on new year’s day” for some odd reason, the first thing they say “so are you not roommates anymore?”  now, is it me, or is that just kind of an odd question? i dunno.

speaking of my roommate getting married last weekend: we’re moving.

betcha didn’t see that one coming, did you?

yesterday, our landlord made plans to show our house to a couple people in the afternoon.  it would have been totally fine if i had been there, she didn’t tell me i couldn’t be, but i just had to get out of there. i don’t know. it just felt… weird.  so i left right before i knew they were going to show up, leaving a nice note on the white board on the fridge telling them we hoped they loved that house as much as we have. i’m so excited to have my own place (well, sort of. i will still have a roommate, but i’ll be there a full 2 weeks by myself before she moves in) but it’s kind of bittersweet. i’ve lived with my best friend from college basically since christmas break my senior year — so 5 years. FIVE. YEARS. that is a long time to live with someone to whom you are not married. she and i live in each other’s heads. we get each other so much. WE EVEN START RANDOMLY WHISTLING THE SAME SONG AT THE SAME TIME. seriously, y’all. so i’m a little sad about not living together anymore, and i really hope that we still get to hang out a LOT before she and fred the husband (weird.) move to wherever he goes to grad school at. one of the schools he applied to was in Florida. I will be visiting. a LOT.

i think i’ll be chronicling our move this week. because i’ll need to procrastinate, basically. so you have that to look forward to! exciting!

and a bucket list. i think i might add that somewhere around here.

i also need to clean up tags and categories. how do you guys use them? do you use categories? do you use tags when you should use categories or vice versa? that’s what i do. and i need to get it straightened out. and the more i blog and less i straighten it out, the longer it’s going to take me.

annnnd just to make sure we end this little blog on a happy note, a lovely quote to end this rambling nonsense:

“If you don’t have a sense of humor, then you probably don’t have any sense at all.” ~ Unknown

Yeah.

manic monday #2: brandy

2009 December 28
by bigskygirlmt

how much do you guys love brandy? let’s face it, the girl is magic, amirite?

my reader was backed up as usual one day and i happened to check her blog to find this:

Life happened. I’m on an indefinite blogging break.

I dm’d her on twitter to find out what was going on.  no answer. so i started praying and hoping and sending all the good vibes i could.

today i got my answer.

and now i want you guys to read about what’s going on in the magical brandy’s life, and send her a little of YOUR magic, please.

brandy, i am still praying and hoping and sending all the good vibes i can. heart you, lady.

xoxo,

raeleigh

~~~
My name is brandy. And I have a blog.
And a plea.
I use my blog to showcase the crazy I meet everyday, share the stories of the kids I teach and document my love for tequila, dairy products and the abdominal muscles of Ryan Reynolds. Rarely do I talk about personal issues on my blog- as personal as the dude that I adore (who I actually met through my blog- single ladies, let that be a very good reason to blog, the possibility of meeting someone as wonderful as my man), but I need your help. And it involves my dude.
He’s a guy who made math comics for my class, so they would love learning about addition. He’s the kinda guy who sends my friends gift cards when they are having hard times, who remembers every story I ever told him, who was the first person I celebrated with when I got a teaching job. He’s the guy who sent flowers to me at school- dozens of my favourite pink roses just because he loves me. He’s a guy who has spent a year patiently explaining (and re-explaining) everything there is to know about football during the important games when silence is preferred. He’s made me word puzzles and comics and stayed up late playing Scrabble with me (even though I beat him almost every time). He’s listened to me cry about school and family and jobs. He is everything I never knew I needed and everything I always knew I wanted.
The holidays have hit us hard. He’s recently been told he may have something called multiple myeloma- an incurable cancer, that gives a person an average of five years of continued life. Though this news has came as a shock, he continues to be exactly who has always been- spending his time worrying about me, rather than worrying about himself. He’s the most selfless individual I know- (he stayed late on Christmas Eve to work, so his co-workers could leave early) and a post like this would never be something that he would promote or encourage but when I’m overwhelmed and feeling helpless, the blogging community has always given me tremendous support and comfort, two things I desperately need at this time.
As I write this, the future is uncertain and we aren’t sure what’s happening. He’ll need to see an oncologist soon, to verify what’s going on in his body. My hope is that everyone who reads this think positive thoughts and if you are a person who prays, could you add him to your list? (You can refer to him as ‘brandy’s hot awesome dude’). If you don’t pray, please keep him in your heart. This cancer is only a possibility and I believe that the prayers and positive thoughts of people can make sure it never becomes a reality.
I want to give a big thank you to the blog owner who scraped their original blog plans and graciously put this up. My goal is to get as many people as possible to see and read this post. If you are reading this and want to help, copy and paste my plea into your blog or send a link through twitter, so more people can keep him in their thoughts. I would be so very grateful (even more grateful than I am to my friend who first showed me the picture of Ryan Reynolds on the cover of Entertainment Weekly. If you haven’t seen it, google it. You. Are. Welcome).
I realize this all sounds dramatic, a Lifetime movie in the making- but this is life. Right now. And I’m throwing away any hint of ego and am humbly asking for you to pray or think kind thoughts. If you are able to pass this on, thank you and if you know anything regarding MM- please email me (my email is on my blog). This isn’t a call for sympathy or a plea for pity. It’s just one girl hoping you can think positive thoughts for the person she adores. If my current heartache provides you with anything, let it be with the reminder that life is short, love is unbending and no one knows what could happen next. Maybe it is silly, but I really do believe that positive thoughts can make a huge difference. Thank you for reading this and if you haven’t already? Please tell someone you love them today.
I did.
projects.
i seem to have a new one at the office every day. the biggest one i started i’m still working on, so i can’t really talk about it.
but when i get it done, you guys will be the first to know.
best of ‘09: new person
new people.
hmm, thought i.
it’s funny, people think i’m really outgoing.
and i guess i am, to an extent.
but i’m one of those people who’s much MORE outgoing once you get to know me.
i don’t like crowds.
ESPECIALLY crowds of people i don’t know that well or have never met.
euuyuck.
and honestly, it’s something i need to work on in therapy.
note to self: get therapy/therapist.
i think it stems from some sort of issues i have from being the little chubby girl in class.
i think i am subconsciously worried that no one will like me.
um. yeah. was kind of hoping to have grown out of that by now.
so. segue.
there’s this thing in vegas next year, that you may have heard of — a little bloggy get together.
i tried to convince ash to go with me so i’d have someone there that i knew. a security blanket.
no dice.
some song and dance about her first wedding anniversary, blah blah blah.
courtney! i thought. she looooves meet ups.
nope.
two friends getting married.
i know all about that. it’s spendy.
so i guess my un-sung heroes (or heroines, in this case) are the wonderful ladies who are trying their best to convince me to bite the bullet and throw myself into a room full of strangers/best friends for life, like rachel and wishy.
my favorite was the email from wishy: You’re coming to the Bloggy Vegas thingamajiggy, riiiiiight?
to that i say, i don’t know yet. but it means the world to me to be asked.
best of ‘09: car ride
for. the. love. people.
i am so sorry.
oh, the holidays.
i’m not sure how i manage to get so behind, but i shall blame it on that.
anyblah. (see the rest of the best 09 bloggers here.)
car ride.
my dad used to always tease me about how if the car was running, i was in it. i was always up for a car ride as a kid, and i’m the same way to this day. it’s my therapy. i love driving around with my dad and shooting the breeze, or riding up front visiting with my mom on family vacation while my dad pretends to pout in the backseat.
as much as i love those car rides, i also love the ones with my bff, Steph. she’s a smoker (i knooooow. i wish she’d quit) and when i’d be home from college i’d hang out at their house at least one night of the weekend. she’d always ask me to come outside and “second-hand smoke” with her. when i’m home we’ve also been known to drive around and smoke (again, only second-hand for me, mom) and drink pepsi. we’re weird, i know. anyway, told you that story to tell you this one: after my dad’s best friend passed away, i called steph (bawling, of course, because that was pretty much what we were both doing) and said “i just want to come home and drive around and SMOKE.”  so we made plans to do just that.  after all the stress and drama of the funeral on saturday, we made plans with our other friend Stace and drove around and talked about everything under the sun.  it was wonderful and amazing and cathartic.
there is no one better in a crisis than that girl. love her.
Manic Monday #1: Jose Cuervo Cookies
2009 December 14
by bigskygirlmt
so I was thinking.
*cue Jeopardy music*
Meme-tastic Monday is super and all, but a new meme every week? like, really?
so i’m switching it up.
the bangles’s “manic monday” is one of my very favorite songs that i will belt out any time it comes on the radio and i may or may not have substituted my own words in different places. i love that damn song. so from here on out, monday will officially be “manic monday.”  you might get a recipe, you might get a meme, you might get some random thing that i found somewhere, but you more than likely won’t get anything that i personally wrote. mondays are just so… manic.
with me?
sweet.
so here’s your first recipe:
Jose Cuervo Christmas Cookies
1 cup of water
1 tsp baking soda
1 cup of sugar
1 tsp salt
1 cup of brown sugar
4 large eggs
1 cup nuts
2 cups of dried fruit
1 bottle Jose Cuervo Tequila
Sample the Cuervo to check quality.
Check the Cuervo again, to be sure it is of the highest quality, pour one level cup and drink.
Turn on the electric mixer. Beat one cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl.
Add one peastoon of sugar. Beat again. At this point it’s best to make sure the Cuervo is still ok, try another cup just in case.
Turn off the mixerer thingy.
Break 2 leggs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit.
Pick the frigging fruit off the floor.
Mix on the turner.
If the fried druit gets stuck in the beaters just pry it loose with a drewscriver.
Sample the Cuervo to check for tonsisticity.
Next, sift two cups of salt, or somefink. Who geeves a sheet. Check the Jose Cuervo. Now shift the lemon juice and strain your nuts.
Add one table.
Add a spoon of sugar, or somefink. Whatever you can find.
Greash the oven.
Turn the cake tin 360 degrees and try not to fall over.
Don’t forget to beat off the turner.
Finally, throw the bowl through the window, finish the Cose Juervo and make sure to put the stove in the wishdasher.
Cherry Mistmas!
*you’ll probably get a serious recipe every now and again. just fyi*
best of ‘09: moment of peace
find the rest of the #best 09 bloggers here.
if you’ll allow me to be so crass for a moment: these last few weeks have been a total shitstorm of emotion.
ahem.
isn’t the mere IDEA of a storm of SHIT enough to make you puke?
that’s how i’ve been feeling.
but something about the holidays, even with the shit storm (it’s just fun to say. i’m sorry, mom) is so peaceful and warm. i think this year has been the one that i’ve found the most peace. i’ve been able to relax. and breathe. and maybe it has something to do with saving almost every extra dime (i’m sorry. i need sbux and the occasional bagel.) and the fact that christmas is going to be v. boring this year, at least commercially, but i have just felt so relaxed. i haven’t been cussing under my breath at idiots in parking lots, i haven’t fallen asleep in a pile of wrapping paper and tape, and i haven’t short-circuited the christmas tree. woo!
i’m sure i feel this way every year, but with the storm of… well. you know. i am paying closer attention to how much i appreciate those around me — you guys, my friends, and most of all, my family.
best of ‘09: best blog find
well hellooooooo!
still alive.
promise.
i have been meaning to do Gwen’s Best of 2009 Blog Challenge and i’m doing about as well with that as i did with the true purpose of Nablahblahblah month.  Oops.  Soooo I’m going to start with today’s challenge and then use the other ones as blog fodder somewhere down the line. because i’m smart like that. and a little lazy sometimes.
ahem.
i have found several new blogs this year that i adore. heart, even. i heart a LOT of things, but i have really strengthened my bloggy friendships this year.
i always love having my real-life friends join the blogging community, and ash did just that this summer. yeah, she doesn’t post all the time, and yeah, she’s a little lurky, and yeah, she’s skipping the #bloggersinsincity meet up to hang out with her husband on their stupid anniversary, but she’s cool.  go check her out.  she’s participating in this project also.
i also love my bitches from when this blog was hosted on blogger, like the queen of dallas (who coined the term “i hate bitches but i love mine”), the lovely ms. kami. she is a momma to Nik and a wife to Nate, and a girl after my own liberal heart. didn’t see her when i was in texas, but next trip i am definitely scheduling a little girl time.
i have also made some new friends, like wishy, and rach, and jill, and lilu, and amy, and other ashley, and jenn, and michelle, and brandy, and mermanda. those girls are the ones that no matter how backed up my reader gets, i never mark them as read, and i always enjoy getting their comments on my days-old posts because i know their readers are just as behind as mine.
i have a tragically short attention span sometimes, so i also have a (large) handful of tumblrings in my reader.  i love beautiful photography and quotes (in fact, i’m a mod for @iheartquotes on twitter — follow us!) so some of my favorite tumblrings are cardboard love, i can read, wears heart on sleeve, eff yeah, love, and of COURSE post secret. and as an added bonus on my short attention span list: jamie’s shopping blog and it made my day. oh, and wordboner.  love.
so i know i broke the rules, but i do that sometimes.  if you want to keep track of all the blogs i mentioned, you can find them all in my blogroll!
